Novice Champs 2012

Written by

BSC Novice and Juniors Championship 2012

7 boats took to the water for the club champs, 5 club boats and 2 visitors returning for the blast. The fleet ranging from a Blaze through lasers and 420’s and right through to a Topper, the wind was poor and fickle but just enough for the OOD to get them away.

Race 1 saw a lot of positions changing, due to the wind (if you could find it). Early leads by Colin and crew in the FF stretched the fleet out until they fell into a hole and the laser of Des and the Blaze of Kevin got back into contention. Naomi and crew flew the spinnaker on the downwind legs to good effect, nice to see that!  Young Matt in the Topper used all of the tricks in the book to make up ground, sitting to leeward and well forward to reduce the wetted area and get the sail high into the wind.  1st went to the Blaze, 2nd to the FF and 3rd to the Topper

Of course, lunch was held during the windiest time, which lead to the OOD stretching out the beat for race 2. The FF and Blaze streaked ahead with the rest of the fleet lying bunched further back.  Bob sailing the EPS made a much better run lying in third place and beating off the 420 now helmed by Martin, for most of the legs.  Unfortunately an error resulted in the 420 passing him on a beat and that was that.  It was at this point that the wind dropped meaning that the long beat was longer and longer and lasted forever.  1st went to the Blaze, 2nd to the FF and 3rd to the 420

Race 3 had the start postponed due to the fleet drifting backwards away from the start as the 1 minute toot went off.  Oh dear not good!!  When a zephyr finally came in the start was taken and off they all went. The start was very good with 2 boats crossing right on the nail.  The Blaze got a fantastic first beat, reaching the windward mark whilst everyone else was barely across the line, unfortunately this burst of success went to his head and he crashed into the mark!  Well actually drifted sideways on because at this point the wind had died again.  Martin in the 420 sailed a lonely route looking for the wind and it didn’t pay. The wind returned and this lead to a real tussle between Des and Kevin for at least a lap, the second lap was more of the same, Martin being brave sailed the same long distance route and this time it really paid dividends bringing him right back into contention and landing him 1st place result.  2nd going to the Blaze, and 3rd to the Laser.

All in all a good turnout and some fun racing, prizes were awarded and everyone retired to the bar.
