A very happy new year to you all!
Whilst most of us have been consuming our own bodyweight in turkey and Christmas pudding and washing it all down with bucket loads of wine and beer, (Or was that just me?) our committee members have been working hard to try and ensure that 2022 is the best year ever here at Burton Sailing Club!
Winter Work Parties Our winter working parties are well underway and with your fantastic support, we have already made huge inroads in getting the club facilities and grounds fully prepared for the coming season. Look out for dates over the next few weeks and come along and help out if you can. There's plenty to be done and many hands make light work!
Club Racing The 'Super Sundays' introduced last year have gone down a storm, with great support across the board from our members. It's fantastic to see our youngsters getting in the mix as well as many of our new members that have only recently learnt to sail. These will definitely be continued this year, so look out for the dates in the calendar. Our Wednesday night racing will continue as a two race series after the favourable feedback of last season. Wednesdays provided some of our best turnouts on the water and the addition of the early race, gave those that are able to arrive at the club early an extra opportunity to race. Sunday race series will continue as before with two back to back races before lunch and two after. We also have Bart's Bash, The Arthur George Memorial, The Interclub, Tripartite Cup and the Christmas Cracker to look forward to. All in all a fabulous, full seasons racing. There are a number of our members that also enjoy going out and about and competing on the class circuits, so if thats something that interests you, then have a chat amongst your fleet to see who's going where and when and maybe tag along.
Windsurfing Our windsurfing and foiling members have also raised their game a few notches in the past twelve months. Seeing them racing across the reservoir at incredible speeds and tacking/gybing on the foil really is a sight to behold! If you wish to improve your skills dont miss out on upcoming Board and Foil coaching sessions! With a number of new young windsurfers coming into the fold and regular Techno coaching sessions, we are hoping for another successful season competing in regional T15 racing too!
Training and Coaching We have quite a few newly qualified instructors and assistant instructors in Sailing, windsurfing and power boating. (Congratulations to you all!) This really strengthens our ability to offer a wider range of good quality RYA training and continuing development for our members. For those that have never sailed, windsurfed or driven a powerboat before, our complete beginner courses are a great introduction to getting you started. Additional course have been added to the calendar this year, particularly aimed at those members wishing to improve their skills. Our informal Saturday coaching and development sessions have gone down well and these will continue and be developed further this season. Friday evenings are also perfect to get out on the water to practise. If you are interested in learning different skills, then please have a chat to either our training Principal, Martin Nelson or Commodore, Carl Avery... Its not just sailing, we can help with race management, RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing) getting into coaching and instructing and many other things, so please just have a chat and we'll see where we can help.
Youth Academy We are focussed on building on the incredible season that our youth academy enjoyed last season. Welcome to all of our new youngsters, we hope that you continue to build on the success of last year. Many of our youngsters were encouraged and supported to try different activities from sailing to windsurfing, trapezing and spinnaker flying as well as competing in local competition for the first time, which was an absolute pleasure to see. We are planning lots more fun events and further training this year! To all of our parents, that helped out in whatever way, thank you! It really does make life easier when there are people willing to help out. It's very much appreciated! If you would like to help out further or want to know how you can help, just have a word with John, Steve, Greg, or Sarah... They will be more than happy to get you involved in one way or another.
Open Meetings Most of the open meetings have been scheduled for the year and are in the calendar so take a look and see what's on offer. We have tried to focus our attention to hosting the major classes sailed by our members at the club, hopefully this will give many of our members the opportunity to get involved in some good quality fleet racing and maybe provide their first steps to getting out on the circuit. Although there are some top class sailors at our open meetings, there are also many just starting out so definitely give it a go!
Winter Mini Series (See the poster alongside) We are delighted to be taking part in the 2022 East Midlands Winter Mini Series and hope that many of you will come along and join in. Our home leg of the series will be the newly formed 'Blizzard' open meeting on 12th/13th February. Both our event and the one at Notts County SC on the 29th/30th January will offer a Windsurf start with a prize for the first windsurfer. There is also a prize for the first junior at each event.
ILCA Super Grand Prix This year we shall also be hosting the ILCA (Formerly Laser) Super Grand Prix. We will have a day of training on the Saturday with one of the top ILCA coaches followed by the finale of the ILCA Grand Prix series. The prize giving for the series will follow the racing and we are looking forward to a bumper turnout for this one!
Summer Regatta The details of our summer regatta haven't been finalised yet, but we are planning a whole load of fun for adults and children alike. Keep an eye out for the date for that one!
Inter Club, Tripartite Cup Usually one of the first events to go in my calendar! It is our turn to host this years Tripartite Cup racing against our neighbours at Swarkestone and Staunton Harold Sailing Clubs. It would be fantastic to have a great turnout and more importantly some good healthy competition for this one so make sure you have the date in your diary!
All in all, we are looking forward to a fantastic season ahead with plenty going on for all. Remember to keep an eye on the calendar, support our club racing and events wherever possible and if you can help out in any way, particularly at our open meetings ,or with training/coaching sessions then that would be very much appreciated.
Thank you Thank you to all of those that have already renewed your membership for 2022 and signed up for duties on the duty calendar it really is, very much appreciated! Our club continues to go from strength to strength and that is all down to you, our members. Our club is run by the members for the members so we really do rely on you all doing your bit to help out Thank you for all of your input and continued support over the past 12 months.
Burton Sailing Club... The Future is in Your Hands! Finally If you would like to influence and be part of how our club is run, then now is the perfect time to get involved. Our AGM is being held at the beginning of March and it would be fantastic to see some new blood and fresh ideas on our committees. Details of how to get involved will be circulated amongst our membership shortly.
Best wishes and once again, a very happy new year to you all!
